Differences between DBR & DFB Lasers

Image
DBR and DFB lasers are the two most familiar and most used lasers with high power single frequency. Both of these lasers have distinct applications in various industries. The high efficiency and exceptional spectral purity enable them to be used in multiple scientific instruments. This article discussed everything about laser diodes- from the definition, types to characteristics. Further, we have also explained the difference between DRB and DFB lasers in the later section. Let us begin with what is a laser diode. What is Laser Diode? A laser diode can be defined as the semiconductor device that generates high-intensity coherent light by converting electrical current into light, where, the word LASER stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.  All of the lasers, including the DFB laser, generate a very sharp and narrow beam of light, which is used in many technologies and industries such as laser printers, DNA sequencing instruments, laser surgery, ...

Broadband Light Source — OCT a High-end Imaging Technology?

Image
OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) is a rapidly evolving imaging technique that has significantly changed the ophthalmology practice in a better way. It is a non-invasive, diagnostic imaging technique that generates cross-sectional images of retinal tissues. In particular, there are two primary techniques for OCT. The first and the latest technique is called- spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) or the Fourier domain OCT, which uses the broadband light source. And the other one is the traditional way called- time domain optical coherence tomography (TD-OCT). In the later sections, we will understand how SD-OCT is superior to traditional TD-OCT and what are the advantages of SD-OCT over TD-OCT. How Broadband Light Source-based SD-OCT is Superior to TD-OCT? Invented in the year 2001, spectral domain OCT is the latest type of OCT that incorporates broadband light source and spectrometer to measure and maintain the reading. In a very short span of time, spectral do...

O-band Optical Amplifier, Its Classification, Needs, and Working

O-band optical amplifier, also known as Praseodymium-doped fiber amplifier (PDFA), is one of the rare-earth-doped fiber amplifiers. But before going any further, let us understand the basics of amplifiers in brief. What is it an Optical Amplifier? An amplifier can be defined as the electronic device that increases or enhances the input signal's intensity. In comparison, the optical amplifier is a device that is used in an optical communication system to directly amplify the optical signal without converting it into an electrical signal. Classification of Optical Amplifiers Optical amplifiers can be classified into two major types: 1. Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers (SOA), and 2. Fiber Optical Amplifiers (FOA) Moreover, Fiber Optical Amplifiers (FOA) can be further divided into the following types:     A. Rare earth-Doped fiber amplifiers 1. Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFA), also known as C or L-band optical amplifier 2. Thulium-Doped Fiber Am...
